November 2023
As part of the ESRC Festival of Social Sciences 2023, on 1st November 2023, the âPupil Voice for Promoting Inclusion in Schoolsâ event was held at St. Johnâs primary school in Southampton. The event was a big success with a great turnout.
Â
During the event, the findings of a project that was funded by UKRI – Research England Participatory Research were presented. The project involved a network of primary schools in Southampton: Mason Moor, Redbridge, St Johnâs, St Maryâs, and Wordsworth. Building on the findings of earlier international research by Prof Kiki Messiou,  the schools were involved in collaborative action research and focused on the following broad question: âHow can we promote inclusion in schools through an engagement with pupilsâ voices?â Each school identified an area of focus that related to inclusion and agreed a plan of how they would explore this, using the pupil voice lens and participatory approaches. In this way, solutions to the identified areas were addressed through active participation of children and teachers.
Â
Participants had the opportunity to view a display of posters summarising the work and discuss informally with the researchers and the teachers from the schools, at the start of the event. Then presentations about the work that took place in each of the schools followed. For example, one school focused on identifying barriers for boys’ writing, another one focused on raising children’s future aspirations, whilst another focused on raising children’s confidence. A video with children who became researchers explaining their involvement was also shown during the event. The event received very positive evaluations. One participant wrote âIt was a really nice event clearly illustrating the collaborations between schools and universityâ, whilst another one commented âGreat ideas I am able to take back and utilise in my school contextâ.
February 2024
On 8th February 2024 we conducted a workshop at the University of Southampton where we had participants from Banister Primary School, Fairisle Infant and Nursery School, Foundry Lane Primary School, Freemantle Academy and Valentine Primary School.
Â
During the workshop, participants had the opportunity to explore the approach of collaborative action research and the use of participatory approaches to explore studentsâ voices in schools. With a focus on promoting inclusion, schools chose topics based on areas that were of interest to them or of concern to them (e.g., improving studentsâ confidence, raising childrenâs aspirations, improving childrenâs writing etc.).
Â
The three hub schools (St Johnâs primary school, St Maryâs primary school and Redbridge primary school) took a leading role during the workshop based on their experience of the pilot study and addressed various questions about the ways in which they implemented participatory research approaches in their own contexts. The new schools are now implementing the ideas that we explored during the workshop, focusing on studentsâ voices and dialogues between teachers and students in relation to their chosen areas. The hub schools are supporting this process whilst university researchers are supporting and monitoring progress in each of the schools. Five PhD students (Chinmaya Potnis, Ping Dong, Josette Crispin, Karen Ibåñez Riquelme, Maria Giulia Tongiani) are supporting as research assistants, collecting and analysing data in each of the schools to explore further the processes involved in implementing such approaches in schools.
